SWEET NIGHT OF GENTLE REST

O’ Sweet night of gentle rest,
I've done the day my very best,
To all of you -- I whisper this,
Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.

May blessed showers
And healing mist
Surround you as
I whisper this,
Goodnight,

And from Barbara, my little dog
Who's snoring as if sawing logs,
But smiles radiant during the day,
And if awake would surely say,
Goodnight.

Goodnight,
Goodnight,
Goodnight.

MY GUARD DOG

My guard dog is blind;
Weighs but fifteen pounds,
But I gotta’ tell you
She follows me around,
And barks loudly
If she needs to;
My little guard dog,
Pekingese
Will never be a fool,
And furthermore
She rules.

I’m trying to write poetry,
But Barbara has to wee;
O my little Pekingese,
How can that possibly be?

You wee’d only an hour ago;
O I know . . . its little Poncho,
That lovely long haired Chihuahua
Who now lives next door?
He must be calling out to you,
As he does each day ‘round four;

You swoon beside the wooden fence,
Never seeing . . . either one,
But you two chat; you are in love,
And your heart has been won;
Love ‘tween old dogs is fun,
And she smiles, that’s all she need do,
For she is the child of my senior years,
And I, well I am - my precious baby’s fool.

Out in the garden she plays
With whatever she has in mind;
I tell her that it's Fairies,
She believes, for she is blind-

And there we go a' chasin'
All the Fairies . . . unseen,
And I too find myself-
Living in her world of dreams.

BARBARA AT THE BAY I

Galveston Bay, Texas

It was DESOLATE today
Down at the Bay,
But that was okay,
Because it's my Barbie Doll's
Favorite place to play.

She is my little red Pekingese,
And she is named
For two things;
One is Barbara Bush,
Because she loves necklaces,
And such;

Yes, she is a little Princess,
ANd I love her very much.

The only time she
Doesn't act that way
Is at the Bay,
When she roots in the sand
Looking for fish heads
With her little
Piggy-puggy, no-nose,
ANd she smiles so large
That her much too large --
Tongue hangs out,
ANd she makes me laugh --
Hardily with glee,
ANd neither of us see
That the Bay was DESOLATE today.

TOOTSIE THE TURTLE

To be read with a posh British accent

Tootsie the Turtle in her little tutu
Was on her way out of the zoo,
When Carlton the Guard on his night shift
Said, ‘ey, Tootsie would ya’ like a lift?

A lift? Dear boy! Why can’t you see,
I’m already as high as God meant me to be!

He meant a lift on his horse of course,
For he had one fine old horse,
But Tootsie said, Ta, Ta! Go your own way!
See you around on another fine day!

Carlton the Guard was shocked you see,
For he was as British as British could be,
He smiled as he watched Tootsie tiptoe away,
Knowing she’d be back by the end of the day.

She’d have to pass him to get into the zoo,
Next time he’d do better at trying to woo.
He loved her in her little Tippy-toe shoes,
And her burgundy, bouncy, chiffon-tutu.

(Tootsie is my turtle from
Childhood days,
And Carlton is my grandson for always)

MY GUARD DOG is from SEABROOK WITHIN A GARDEN                BARBARA ANNE and Her Human down at the Bay gathering washed up drift wood; her favorite place to play
