POEM FROM THE BOOK

AS A SMALL BOY IN THE GARDEN

Homage to Amy Lowell’s 1919 poem;
Madonna of the Evening Flowers

All day long I have been shopping,
Now I am home. I call: Where are you?
But there is only your old car out in the garage.
The sun shines in on your wooden cart,
Your red tool box and your tools
Tossed about, but you
Are not there. I am
Both confused
And lonely;
Where are you?
I go about searching.

Then I see you standing under the Pin
Oak Tree with sprigs of the Lilac
Tree in your arms. You stand
Like a child and you smile.
You tell me the Peonies
Have ants and the
Mint has run
Rampant,
That
You are
Trimming
The Bridal Wreath
Spirea. You explain about
All -- of it, and suddenly I am
Overwhelmed with joy, and see you as
Your Mum saw her small boy, I embrace you
And tell you I'm happy to be home -- for I have
Missed you. The birds are singing our song.
My heart of hearts . . . where I belong.

BLACK BIRDS II

*
The
Cold wind
Is howling out
Side my front door.
This night is bad and
Rotten...to the core.  The
Black Birds are ever...outside
My front door-I leave them crumbs
But, they wait ... for more, right here,-
Just out side my front door, (they...wait)

From the Poetry a' la' Shape Book.
Symbolism can be quite powerful;
Of course we know the black birds
Are the bill collectors, don't we?

VINCENT VAN GOGH

And was probably convinced that
He could fly – as well,

VOICES OF THE DEAD

Do voices of the dead sing from flowery vines,
And do they chime longingly throughout all of time?
The Bible says they are sleeping and not to be disturbed,
Then, how is it that he -- can repeat -- her every word?
The Bible says that what he hears is demonic to be sure,
A Demonic -- Angel . . . and, anything but pure?
Still she quiets his longings,
Giving him assurance of the day,
I truly hope the Prophets are wrong
In just a few words . . . that they say?

MODERN JAPANESE SENRYU POEM

So, I am what I am,
And not what I think I am.

OUCH
That really hurts!
