POEM FROM THE BOOK ROSE ROCKS OF OKLAHOMA Indian Legend retold as a Shape Poem by Jean Elizabeth Ward Once a young maiden lived with her tribe in central Oklahoma. She was always cheerful and singing, and was much loved By the people of her tribe, but she became so very ill, Even the medicine man could not heal her, and so She died. With small sandstone rocks the tribe Built an altar to her, and after many days The Great Spirit spoke and the sound Of his mighty voice turned the Rocks into lovely roses; An external symbol Of the maiden's Spirit, and so The Rose Rock is The state Rock of Ok. Barite rock crystal INDIAN BLESSING Let us walk softly on the Earth with all living as we go, That one God kind and wise created all. Copyrighted 2006 by Jean Elizabeth Ward. |

| AN INDIANS LAST MILE Dedicated to the Navajo Indians Tribulations and troubles . . . Sometimes more than should be; I will put them in my hands And walk out into the sea. Hold up my hands; cry out, here eternity Take these tribulations and troubles, Leave my soul be. It seems my life has been More than I can stand, Even as a little child I walked the old hard land That all my people ... know. I want to feel peace and smile As I step out of the sea, For I'm walking my last mile, Now ... give me a helping hand And an answer for my people too. ~~~ We all deserve so much more Than Hell at our own front door. COMMENT This poem was inspired by a program I saw About the Navajo Indian And The Code They used during the war. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK NEWARK OHIO'S GREAT CIRCLE EARTHWORKS Now Nothing but a circle, A mound upon the ground, But as I close my eyes, And Walk around this mound As we ... visitors ... do, I think of you, My native love -- of long ago, Dancing ... in the sun-lit glow; O how I watched you Circling, Circling around, As my heart grew More in love with you. Now -- daily As I walk around, I still think of you Beneath this mound, Though We are an eternity apart; Be still, be still My lonely Beating Heart. ~~~~~~~ Built by the Hopewell Indians 2000 years ago; I lived there for 10 years. |
EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK I AM A MANDALA MAKER The Mandala Maker, Precise and proud, Draws her line, And thinks out loud. What will it be That I will see tonight? I must not think, Yet, think . . . right, She closes her eyes, Thank you for this moment; ... She writes ... To the left, and to the right, Around and around she goes, One side, and then the other As she dwells not -- On the future, the past, Her family, or her lover. Aas! Alas she Has completed this one, And to The Mandala Maker It was creative fun. ~~~~~~~ LONE WOLF SPOKE Modern Senryu Poem And the wolf said to the child, Fear not, fear not; we are both wild. |
